Despite several advancements in reading education over the years, including much research and the use of technology to teach reading, many students continue to struggle in their ability to read well. The 2022 results of the National Assessment of Educational Progress {NAEP), known as the Nation’s Report Card, show lower average reading scores for fourth graders in the United States than in 2019, and the 2024 NAEP national average reading scores for grades four and eight were lower than those for 2019 and 2022 (NCES, 2025).
